A Call for Collaboration!

I've just signed on here at dawanda and have so far been really impressed with the quality and variety of merchandise and the friendliness of the members. I shoot very unusual photographs, very surreal, but always in a fashion/vintage style. I'm working on a new series of photographs of stylish objects, so if anyone is looking for a cool and distinct, professional photo of one of your products, let me know and maybe we can arrange a long-distance exchange/shoot. check out my work on dawanda (http://en.dawanda.com/shop/pamelaklaffke) or on my website at www.pamelaklaffke.com, and if you like what you see, feel free to get in touch — or just visit my shop anytime if you're looking for something interesting to hang on your walls.
cheers,
pamela

Cassette tape pouch - this is one of my bestsellers. It's a great little gift and you can put some little surprises in there, before you give it to someone. I used to make mix tapes for everyone all the time. Now, i don't have a working cassette player anymore. So i designed this in remembrance of all the mix tapes i made in the past :-)

Matryoshka wrapping paper the newest addition to my shop. I designed the pattern myself and had the paper printed. It's very colourful and cheerful and you can use it for almost any occasion! I even framed one piece and hung it on my wall.

8. Tell me a bit about you...

I'm a graphic designer, graduated in 2005. I soon realized that I didn't want to work in an advertising agency - like most graphic designers do. My favourite thing to do was illustrating and creating little products. Finally, my dream came true, when I got the chance to open my own shop in Hannover, Germany. I use it as a studio as well and I can't imagine any better job than this one!

9. Do you have a website, or blog? Yes: http://www.enna-online.com/

And if you're curious about my shop in Hannover, check this:http://www.flickr.com/photos/23508825@N00/

Introducing... Duffy Designs!

1. DaWanda Shop Name: Duffy Designs
2. Dawanda Shop URL: http://en.dawanda.com/shop/Duffydesigns
3. When did you open your shop? Jan.1,2008
4. Are you in the DaWanda Shop Directory here? Yes
5. What Category are you under? Jewellery category
6. What do you sell: Hand fabricated metal jewellery. I use primarily sterling silver, some copper, and bronze with found objects such as river rocks, shells, porcelain shards , and anything that looks natural and beautiful. My customers have begun giving me items to incorporate into my designs and I love the input! The shells, for instance, come from a special area of the Atlantic Coast off of North Carolina. They are roughly tumbled by the sea so that they become beautifully abstact. I've used the shell, rock, and porcelain shards in mosaic patterns with grout and I like that look. My designs have and are evolving with the various materials I find to use.

7. Describe 2 of your current projects:

I like to do so many different things it's really hard to keep a coherent "look" for my work. I think I will always, however, construct silver "boxes" in which to showcase objects I love. I will continue working with the shells and the porcelain shards in mosaics, but I also have been enjoying etching bronze and copper for use in larger designs. I'm still doing the Prismacolored steel designs because they are an endless rainbow of colors. I bounce between that and black! I have a way to blacken steel with heat and a beeswax mixture, so that's another way to go. I work on several ideas at a time.

8. Tell me a bit about you...
I am a 62 year old grandmother of three, a wife, and am owned by a Beagle and two cats. I love to garden and read when I'm not making jewelry. I'm very interested in learning . I still go to metal working workshops at Arrowmont Crafts School in the summers. I am just beginning to give classes in metal work. That will be a new adventure, I'm sure. I used to do many art shows but am down to one local one and an Open Studios event in November. It's great to have the feed back from those events.

9. Do you have a website, or blog? http://www.duffydesigns-metalworkingfiend.blogspot.com/

Help required for the Links Directory... Free advertising!!

The DaWanda Community has really grown over the last year and with so many of us now I think it is now time to share the comunity blog and related directory with other shop owners who would like to contribute.

I want to start with the Shop Links Directory at http://dawandashopdirectorylinks.blogspot.com, which is fast becoming a great way to find DaWanda Shops.

Why am I looking for help? Well, honestly for two main reasons. Firstly my own work often makes keeping up with this blog difficult, but secondly and more importantly to DaWanda sellers, I want this to become more of a community thing. The DaWanda community spirit is something really to be proud of and I feel together we could really turn this little blog into a great show case for sellers... maybe even create more sales?! The job role isn't a big one... in fact I create posts every other week, but with the main blog and the ning community time is only finite.

If you are interested, please check out http://dawandashopdirectorylinks.blogspot.com/2008/11/become-guest-editor-on-dawanda-shop.html where I have given you full details of the free promotional gifts you will get in return!

Craft Business - Joint Ventures.

A joint venture is the collaboration between two different businesses on their way to succeed. By offering a service to business owners you can promote your home business for free – and we makers know free advertising is almost impossible to find nowadays!

Part One: The Experience

My husband met the 'The Old Riga' tea bar owners before their business even started, as he made the electricity installation for the place. We became good friends along the way. A few months after the opening, I needed a place to make a showroom for my hand crafted jewelry and I didn’t want to make it at home, so I asked them if I could borrow a "room" (the bar is a 100 year old house, restored but untouched, so the distribution has rooms) for the jewelry party. They would get more than 20 customers eager to try their delicious tea mixes and I would have a beautiful environment and an easy-to-find location for my exhibition.

They were more than happy to accept. We discussed all the details of the display. I even made sketches of what I wanted and tried to keep space to the minimum. As they are crafty people themselves, they added very helpful suggestions.

Not only they didn’t want a percentage of my earnings (I offered them a 30% of sales) but also gave a wonderful treatment to the party attendants, which spent a little fortune on their exquisite teas and coffees. The party was a complete success for both parts.

The owners gave us this gorgeous painting for the display!

Since then our businesses have made many things together. I had a henna booth every Saturday during the whole summer, made a free Tarot reading session on last year’s Halloween party and most important, we have recommended the other’s business to as many people as we have been able to. Word of mouth is the strongest advertising system of all. We have taken all our friends to the bar and I make many customer appointments there instead of at my house, which is a great alternative when you don’t want to (or don’t have time to) clean! We constantly provide ourselves with flyers and business cards. We discuss better ways to improve our work and share what we have learnt along the way.

Their Halloween party is their biggest hit in the year. Last year more than 200 people passed along the night, and we’re talking of a really small place, on a really small city, and on a country where Halloween is not celebrated almost. This year, since we have re-opened the tattoo studio and have started selling prints of my artwork, what we needed was some promotion, so we are making promo packs for them to give in a free raffle. Every person gets a ticket as they enter and at midnight the raffle will happen. In the promo packs, their flyers and business cards will be included. We will have a small booth for our prints and other little beauties related like buttons, notepads, cards and stickers. Most of the everyday customers there are Goth teenagers so I’m sure a few will find something to buy!

Our henna booth: hard work but oh so beautiful!

Part Two: The Theory

The generosity on both parts is the key to successful joint ventures. On your side, you must be creative and offer different things because what a small business needs is variety. Sometimes it will be more profitable for you; sometimes it will be more profitable for them. You have to learn to give before you learn to earn. The more generous you are, the better karma and luck you will have, and the more opportunities you will find along the way. All long-term artists know very well sales can come from the most unsuspected places and situations, so do as much as you can to help.

It is important to build a respectful and loving relationship between the other business and yours. You have to love what they do too, so they will love what you do. Joint ventures based only on profit rarely ever succeed because both parts have selfish goals. Know the people you work with and care for them.

Do not ask for too much. Remember your "host" business can be very busy too! If you are displaying your work at their shop, keep everything as simple as possible for them. Provide them with a price sheet with their and your percentage so they don’t have to calculate that themselves. Also provide them with simple packaging or bags if needed. Anything that makes the transaction smoother is a must!

Present a good project for your stand or display. Making your own displays or buying pre-made ones, keep in mind the style of decoration the other business has and try to make it look like part of it.

On the other business side, do not accept deals where you have to do all the work by yourself. If you sell crafts, the shop owner must be not only open to your ideas, but willing to add their own.
A shop owner that does not feel passionate about your work won’t make you sell. We are only good at selling what we love, so if you make gothic chokers look for people who love gothic chokers, not teddy bears.

Even if the shop owner is your best friend, keep all terms clear and offer a private contract between both parts for anything that could be regulated. You don’t want to lose a friend!

Part Three: Epilogue

If both parts respect each other, joint ventures are not only a very profitable way for both businesses, but also an amazing personal experience of growth and help. The amount of knowledge you will get from seeing other people work and grow their businesses is one of the most valuable experiences you will have on your way to success, so be creative and think of an idea for your sister-in-law hairdresser salon, your school mate boutique or simply go to that place where you love to shop and offer a fund raising, a face painting party for kids or whatever your creativity suggests you. Only those who dare win!

How to List your Item on all 3 Language sites.

Have you listed you item only on the English site? Did you know that by listing on all three language sites your items are open to a wider audience?

To make your item appear in all 3 languages...

  • Go to my DaWanda and press My shop.
  • Find your item and them press edit.
  • Under the English description and tags you will see 'do you wish to list in another language - German or French'. You will notice that 'German' and 'French' are highlighted in blue.
  • Press 'German' and up will pop boxes for your description and tags.
  • Do the same for ‘French’ and a second set of boxes will appear.
  • You will need to copy and paste your English description and tags if you do not speak German, or French... I find a German and French dictionary helps a little with the tags at least.
  • Press save and continue and again once you get to the pictures.
  • Your item has now been added to the French and German sites.

Handy Tip… if you don’t speak German or French (like me!) then try adding the following before your English description, when you are listing in a different language.

German - Bitte beachten Sie die englische Beschreibung, wenn Sie mehr über meine Produkte erfahren wollen.

French - Veuillez lire la description en anglais si vous voulez en savoir plus sur cet article!

Which means ‘Please read the description in English if you want to know more about this product!’

The New Directory of Shops

As you may have read my old link provider will soon be no more and so I have had to come up with a way of promoting those georgeous DaWanda shops. I decided to do this by opening a new site at http://dawandashopdirectorylinks.blogspot.com, which is linked here as DaWanda Shop Directory Links on the top, right hand panel ---->

There are 2 ways you can find shops there; Firstly check out the lists provided under the top page headings, or secondly scroll through the featured sellers' posts, where you can find pictures of their products.

This is the first of the featured sellers - DaWanda Shop Directory Links: Le Bar du Vent

Please check out Le Bar du Vent and the Directory of Shops to find your favourite DaWanda shop!

4. Are you in the DaWanda Shop Directory here? I just entered the information and I am waiting for it to be reviewed.
5. What Category are you under? Mainly Art – Original Prints, but I have items under other categories too.
6. What do you sell? I sell my artwork, mainly in original high quality prints, but I'm also expanding it to magnets, cards, matchbooks and other small gifts. Very soon I will add buttons, rings and other jewelry, all based in my paintings and drawings.
7. Describe 2 of your current products.

My original prints are made in high quality Data Becker photo paper, which ensures amazing colours and more than a hundred years of maintenance under the worst condition. I work mainly on fantasy themes, strongly influenced by gothic and pre - raphaelite art. I work mainly on acrylics and Faber - Castell crayons.

Another product I sell are customized matchboxes, which have been a best seller among friends and customers. A simple small matchbox is customized with my paintings and black cardboard. I started making them because I wanted my altar's matches to look better... and then I got custom orders for them!

8. Tell me a bit about you...

I've painted since I can't remember, probably since I could hold a pencil in my hand. I like painting glimpses of my inner landscapes, like if they were doors to the subconscious. Sometimes the paintings become doors to others too – that is magic to me. I never chose it, I was chosen by it. I cannot live without painting and drawing. That is a blessing and a curse I must admit!

I am also a tattoo and henna artist. I was taught by Harry, a wonderful artist and person three years ago. Then I taught my husband and now we share a studio, where I can enjoy the designing of pieces that will last forever on our customer's skin. That is a true privilege I thank everyday. As painting, tattooing is a complex skill that needs lots of patience and love, and something that changes both the tattooer and the tattooed. It has a lot of ritual and makes deep bonds with the person receiving the ink.

I am a complete old-school illustrator: I make sketch, then make drawing, then scan. The only digital editing is adjusting the colours as close as possible to the original piece. I have nothing against digital art (or against any other form of art!), it's just the way I work. I like doing everything by hand.

9. Do you have a website, or blog? Yes, you can find it at http://supramonster.wordpress.com/

A Day in the Life: 'Literary Walk and Wire Crochet'

The weather was so lovely yesterday! Sunny and warm finally!
So we decided to go for a walk, a literary route related to Jane Austen. I just love her novels!
We started in Chawton, where Jane Austen spent her last 8 years, then trough some fields and woodland till Farringdon, a very lovely small village with very charming old cottages and then back, using a disused railway line.
It was great!

Then back home for my new glass beads and wire! For some time now I wanted to try crochet with wire. I saw some absolutely great work around and I really like the way they look! Very organic in a way...
I did some research about what kind of wire I need but it seems I have not done my job properly as it was a nightmare working with 20 meters of wire that as soon as I released the bundle it turned into one big mess blob.
So actually if jewelers from the community would have any suggestion for wire for this kind of project I would really appreciate!
Anyway, I managed to make something but it's far from perfect. What do you think of the end result?
By the way, I call it "The Brazilian Chaos Bracelet" ;)

Great Photos will help you sell!

I know we all make these great items and find ourselves frustrated when they do not sell. Why is that? I don’t know it could be many things price, style, or you just have the wrong target audience. Whatever it is one of the most important things to get your items sold is good photos.

What makes a good photo you ask?

*Background*-Well for a product you should keep it on a simple solid color background. White is the best choice for a background since it goes with everything. If it is discolored in the photo it is easier to lighten it up than other colors. Plus it won’t detract from your item. Props can be good but there is a point where they take over the picture.

*Focus*-When I shop online I want to know what I am looking at. I do not want to try and figure out what I should be seeing. Blurry photos are a huge turn off.

*Light*-If your photos are too dark no one can see your product. Using photo editing software like photoshop can really brighten up those dark pictures.

You don’t need a studio to take great pictures. I use a few pieces of white paper and adobe photoshop to fine tune my pics.I am not a photo god either and I have listed some items with horrible pictures with leopard print backgrounds. What was I thinking? So good luck and take some photos.

My Recent Purchase from My Little Magic Shop

I do buy from DaWanda as well as sell and wanted to take this opportunity to tell you about one my most recent purchases...

I really love aromatherapy so I asked Carolina from http://en.dawanda.com/shop/magickshop if she had a perfume from her shop's collection that could help to keep me calm on a recent flight abroad... she recommended 'Elizabeth', filled with a fresh soothing bloom fragrance. I couldn't help myself it sounded just the thing...

My little parcel arrived about a week before the flight... here it is... all wonderfully packed.

And with a few small gifts too... a handmade notepad (which is now in my purse) and a sample of incense (which I'm going to try out over the next few weeks).

I love the perfume, it is just what I imagined and I really do feel calm when I wear it... Thank you Carolina!

If you would like to try one of Carolina's perfumes, please see her perfume collection at http://en.dawanda.com/shop/magickshop/18538-Bohemian-Perfumes

What is Paypal?

Here is a copy of my explanation from the guide to buying and selling on the right hand panel and the Paypal link.

----------------------

I have always found Paypal easy to use as both a seller and a customer of on-line stores. As a payment system it's popularity is growing day by day and is widely used on both larger forums, such as Boots, eBay, Etsy and DaWanda to smaller business websites. I would recommend Paypal as a quick and reliable banking system.

Paypal describe their service as (direct quote);

Founded in 1998, PayPal enables any business or consumer with an email address to securely, conveniently and cost-effectively send and receive payments online. Our network builds on the existing financial infrastructure of bank accounts and credit cards to create a global, real-time payment solution.

PayPal has quickly become the leading payment network for online auction websites, including eBay. With over 100 million account members worldwide PayPal is also being increasingly used at other e-commerce sites. Users can send payments for free via their PCs or web-enabled mobile phones.

On eBay, DaWanda and Etsy Paypal can easily be used to make immediate payment for purchases at the checkout. Paypal make the payment on your behalf either from funds you have in your Paypal on-line account (which takes 10 days to add from your bank account), or your credit card (Mastercard, Visa, Maestro, Amex, Switch, Solo, Delta or Visa Electron), or by echeque (if you have no funds in you Paypal on-line account then Paypal will withdraw the amount from your bank account in 10 days to pay for your items).

Equally you can also receive payment from buyers through the same methods and the monies will be stored in your on-line Paypal account. You can then transfer any money received to your personal bank account, but note charges may occur if you withdraw less than the limit (see your account for details - in Britain the limit is £50). You should also note as a Seller, that Paypal will charge a percentage per transaction. Details of these are available on the Paypal site.

All you need is a UK, most European or US bank account to open a Paypal account... I think there are plans to role this system out to other countries soon.

The link to Paypal is http://www.paypal.com/

How to leave Feedback for a buyer or a seller.

So you have your purchase, or your sale and the transaction is over... what better way to let everyone know how it went, than to leave some feedback. Not sure how to do it?

Buyers leaving feedback for Sellers

  • Log in to your account
  • Under 'My DaWanda', press 'Purchases and Sales'
  • Press 'Purchases' on the left hand side and here you will find a list of your purchases.
  • Find the sale number and seller you have received your item from and press 'rate the seller' on the right hand side.
  • Select your rating number from 1 to 5, 5 being excellent.
  • Add your comment
  • Here you also have an option to leave a picture... this could be your entry to the DaWanda photo competition which happens month at http://en.dawanda.com/photo
  • Press save and you are finished

Sellers leaving feedback for Buyers

  • Log in to your account
  • Under 'My DaWanda', press 'Purchases and Sales'
  • Press 'Sales' on the left hand side and here you will find a list of your sales.
  • Find the sale number and buyer you have sent your item to and press 'rate the buyer' on the right hand side.
  • Select your rating number from 1 to 5, 5 being excellent.
  • Add your comment
  • Press save and you are finished

So why should I leave feedback?

Feedback is a great way to let everyone know how your transaction went... it's also very helpful for sellers who can use feedback as recommendations of their work for potential buyers. However, it is always important that feedback is fair and reflective of a number of aspects of the transaction... so remember;

  1. how did I find the product?
  2. how did I find the customer service?
  3. was the item packaged well?
  4. was it sent in good time? Remember here that sellers cannot be responsible for delays by the shipping carrier!
  5. if I had a problem on receipt was the seller helpful?

Weigh up all of this information and assess which mark from 1-5 is fair, for example if the item arrived broken from the shipping carrier, but you were refunded by the seller and you found the seller helpful then a rating of 5 is still very fair!

It is also always good to remember that as a buyer your feedback from sellers will help you too and you will be rated on the following aspects;

  1. did you pay in good time?
  2. did you check correspondence with the seller regularly?
  3. did you provide the correct shipping information on your DaWanda order?

So enjoy shopping with DaWanda and help promote the community by leaving some feedback today,

Sara x

Profile Pages as Advertising Tools

Earlier on in the year I was asked by another selling forum to write an article about Seller profiles. I decided to use this opportunity to show that profile pages can be used as an in-store marketing tool to benefit both you (the Seller) and your customers. I am now posting a version of this article here, as I think it has benefit to our DaWanda community.
-------------------------------

Taking the time to write a good profile page is your key opportunity as a Seller to reach out to your customers and entice them into your store with a background to the business and products you are selling. Whilst selling forums often advise which bits of information you post here, there is no hard or fast rule about how you should present it. There are however ways in which you can strive to write a great profile page and maximise your opportunity to sell.

Here are some options I think could help on DaWanda;

The first paragraph is key. If you watch a film, you can usually tell within the first 10 minutes whether you want to keep on watching, well it’s that same thing with profile pages… your first paragraph is the key to keeping your customers reading.

Get friends and family to read your first paragraph – does it spark interest? Raise positive questions? Or make them want to read more?

Follow this with a clearly defined layout. Not all buyers have the time/want, or need to read your entire profile each time they visit. So define your layout by use of titles, line breaks or capitalisation of key words. That way your buyer can skim down the page to look for the heading they're interested in, without reading through the whole thing to find the answers to their questions.

Next make your profile text easy to read. It is important to be as clear and concise in your wording as possible… you want to keep their attention once you have got them past the first paragraph! It is also worth remembering that DaWanda is a global market place, so English is not necessarily everyone’s first language.

And finally, write in a friendly and approachable manner, remembering to keep it professional.

Like few other selling forums DaWanda is starting to gain a real sense community spirit about it, so capitalise on this! Shoppers and fellow Sellers like to spend time getting to know a shop before they buy, so don’t be afraid to write a bit about your self, or your business. Do remember to keep a professional edge to your profile though… after all you are a business, whether you sell the extra bags you knit whilst sat in front of your telly, or you are a full time operation! Buyers must feel that you take your products and business seriously. So striking a balance here is key.

- All of this is great, but what do I include? Well, let’s have a look…

Firstly, tell me something about yourself. Adding a short biography can give buyers so much information about you as an artist. Feel free to tell me a bit about your background, where you come from and how you started your business. Tell me about what inspires you and your craft passions.

Secondly, tell me something about your business and your products. Give your readers an idea of what you are setting out to achieve. What is your mission/why are you selling me this?

You could include:

Is your business a part-time venture, full-time or a charity?
What sort of products do you sell?
What is the idea behind your products?
What’s special about them?
How are they manufactured?

Remember, although you want to be informative you do not want to scare your reader off at this point with a hard sell!

Keep your shop policies and additional product information in the relevant area. Listing your policies here would be duplication. Try to keep these is the provided boxes, that way they will show up under each listed item.

And Lastly! Remember that what reads as a great profile is entirely personal to the reader, so don’t worry about competing with your fellow sellers; write something that you feel comfortable with publishing.

Lots to think about? Yes, I think so. A well written profile page is something we should take our time over and use to try and capture the essence of what we are about. Your profile page is where you get to show the energy and joy you have and to inspire potential buyers.
